Golfing Ability?

One of the most common questions we get is: “Hey Snowgolf sounds like a ton of fun and insane, but I don’t golf or play well” etc. While golfing ability is certainly part of the equation, especially in the Tiger Woods division, this is Snowgolf. Skill is only one part of the equation, and there are only a few shots that are truly challenging. Weird bounces, hops, and putts play a HUGE role in what happens.

Complete beginners can and usually do well each year. Many times the best shots of the whole tournament come from players who have never set foot on a real golf course. Drunk people have made more hole in one’s than the scratch golfers have. For that matter, our team (Barry and Del) team has done well almost every year, even winning a couple of times, and trust me, we SUCK at real golf.

Balls and Clubs

We use a Viking Paddle Tennis ball. Make sure your club can hit a ball down the fairway as well as putt on the green. It is one club per player. There are teams that use regular golf clubs. Some teams have modified clubs by attaching metal plates or blocks of wood. There also teams that have gone “high tech” and invented there own clubs by combining a golf club shaft and a tennis racket.

Smooth and easy is the key. The balls have a lot of give so trying to kill it is even less effective than it is with a real golf swing.

After swinging, pay CAREFUL attention to where the ball went. Assuming we have more than 3″ of snow on the ground, anything hit out of the fairway can be tricky to find, especially after 75 other players have left footprints everywhere.

Having your first player go out and spot the other golfer’s balls is a pretty solid strategy to rotate thru during the day.

Snow Golf Tips #2 – PLAN Y0UR BEVERAGES CAREFULLY*

Beverages are always a major part of the day.
We’re wandering around a snow covered field for 2-3 hours….
All teams should bring water and soft drinks

Many teams choose to bring adult beverages.
Various concoctions, mixes, and blenders are not unheard of.
Bright teams realize a field of snow means little ice is needed.
Smart teams bring coolers to carry the beverages.
Really smart teams bring kids’ plastic sleds to move the coolers.
GENIUS teams have brought snowmobiles and dogsleds.
Outfit yourself accordingly.

Oh, and while a keg seems like a great idea. it’s actually heavy and not too much fun to pull around a field. Even in a boat.

And finally, its important to remember the golden rule from kindergarten:
Nice snowgolfers share.

Snow Golf Tips #3 – PLAN Y0UR SNOWGOLF CLUBS STRATEGY

Many experienced vets spend a lot of time manufacturing their own clubs and weaponry, with varying results. You are hitting a paddle tennis ball roughly the size of a racquetball, but a bit softer.

Past attempts to build snowgolf clubs run the gamut from tennis rackets with half a golf shaft and a putter head in the end
to modified hockey sticks to the ever popular variety of wood blocks and metal plates glued, welded, and duct taped to golf irons. If you can attach a golf club shaft to it, someone’s tried it.

Hint: Baseball bats SEEM like a good idea, but aren’t accurate.

Others simply prefer to use oversized irons and/or large head drivers. Remember, you’ve got to use ONE club all day for all the shots and the course is designed with long tee shorts, short chips, and putts. SMART teams plan their club selection as a group covering everything.

Snow Golf Tips #4 – PLAN Y0UR COSTUME AND FOOTWEAR ACCORDINGLY

While we play through anything and solider on,
wet soggy feet or flimsy light costumes on cold days just sucks.
Layers are a good thing and smart.
Waterproof boots are a VERY good thing.

Pay attention to the weather and dress accordingly.
In the last 10 years, most of which were held in January:

the weather has ranged from bright and sunny to snowstorms
the temp has ranged from 40+ to subzero
the wind has ranged from calm to “blustery”
the snow coverage has ranged from green grass to north pole depths
the fairways have ranged from 24″ hard pack to 6″slushy
and the non-groomed “rough” from wet slop to 4 feet of powder

If it’s sunny, bring sunglasses. It’s a big snowy field.
An extra pair of socks / boots is always a good idea for the afterparty
